Amateur Radio and The Walkie Talkie Bank Job

Today of cellphone communication it is often difficult to understand that radio communication between two parties isn’t private. Any radio amateur is aware of that, but it seems that back in year 1971 some bank robbers had not quite got the idea, so when Robert Rowland, an amateur radio fan form Mayfair, settled down with his radio place and a nice tote one Saturday night, this individual heard a much more interesting conversation than this individual was expecting. We understand, because he taped a huge part of what he observed, and in 2008 this individual dug out the tags so the event could be made into a movie. At the time, the crime became known as the ‘Walkie Talkie robbery’, the film is called ‘The Bank Task. ‘ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8etze8eF2KU

When Rowland first heard the robbers discussion he thought they were robbing a tobacconists shop and called the neighborhood law enforcement. They seemed to find Mr Rowlands more enjoyable that important suggesting that if he heard anymore ‘funny voices’ he get them tape. An irritated Mr Rowland did exactly that, by using a cassette recording machine he had recently been using to learn Romance language.

Eventually a local Policier came round, but was soon called away. Mister Rowland called the law enforcement again, but eventually, exasperated by their not enough response, and with the noticeable robbery continuing on the radio, he called Ireland Yard, headquarters of London’s Metropolitan Police.

Two ordinary clothes officers arrived at Rowland’s 4th floor even in London’s Wimpole Streets and sat program Rowland all night, listening to the robbers. In the morning, another two officials arrived and paid attention to Sunday’s developments, but a law enforcement check of local finance institutions showed nothing unusual (from the outside) On Friday morning, when staff came at Lloyd’s bank in London’s Bakers Street (ofcourse not far from the toned of famous fictional private investigator Sherlock Holmes) they found that almost all of the protection deposit boxes had recently been emptied by robbers who had dug a canal from a near by shop and entered the bank burial container with the floor.

Consequently far, this seems like a story of incompetence. Rowlands knew that for his radio set to choose up such a strong signal, the robbery must have been taking place within 1 and a half miles, the robber had started Saturday nighttime and continued completely On the – surely sufficient time for the authorities to obtain the contributors.

The story made good news headlines and then instantly stopped. Scotland Yard required the tapes and reporters were warned off when they tried to question Mr Rowland. Then the police actually threatened to prosecute Mr Rowland for listening to an unlicensed radio station.

No-one understands just what happened, four criminals were caught and jailed, but the money and other items stolen were never recovered, and since safety deposit boxes were involved, no-one knows just what was taken. And therein is situated the mystery. Over the following years there was many scandals involving senior associates of he police, and a rumour the particular one security deposit box had included compromising pictures of the customer of the British Noble family, while others got contained proof of law enforcement officials corruption at the top levels, resulting in a load of prosecutions and resignations in the past due 1970’s.

With the release of the film several British newspapers sough away Mr Rowland, the beginner radio enthusiast who acquired taped the conversation. This individual said the tapes acquired been returned to him six years after the robbery. The Daily Email also reported discussing with one of the actual thieves, who refused to brief review on pictures of any royal person but do say that the thieves have been disgusted to find lots of unpleasant pornographic pictures in the containers that they can had left in place hence the police could track down the owners.

And it all demonstrates that when you decide down with your car radio set, you never know who you are talk to, or what you might listen to, one reason why amateurish radio is still a fascinating and absorbing hobby.
